A recent move by the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation made it possible for a
total of 1,568 hotels to be registered in Lagos, Oyo,
Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun states.
The Lagos Zonal Coordinator of NTDC, Mr. Nasir Kaka, told the News
Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the hotels, which were also licensed,
were operating in the South-West states of the federation.
According to Kaka, 305 of the registered hotels are in Oyo State; 23
in Osun; 41 in Ekiti; 37 in Ondo; 156 in Ogun; and 1,006 in Lagos.
“Our officials have been going on registration drive to see that hotels operating in the zone are registered. The registration exercise started in 2001 and we have registered
about 1,568 hotels. It is an ongoing thing and there are still some
hotels that are yet to register,’’ Kaka remarked.
Kaka said the registration and licensing of hotels became necessary
as it would enable the corporation to keep a data on each hotel for
proper monitoring.
NTDC put all the registered hotels in a database and on their website for prospective guests to know the credible ones and avoid being duped or offered poor services. The hotels that had yet to register with NTDC are encouraged to do so, and that any hotel found operating illegally would be penalised.
Kaka further warned that the corporation would not hesitate to close down any hotel operator that failed to renew his licence, as the corporation would not relent in its effort at ensuring
that Nigeria is a safe destination for both Nigerian and foreign
tourists.
